This project involves the reconstruction of an existing Late Transitional Period 2-storey Shophouse just outside of the secondary settlement conservation area in Joo Chiat. Simple geometrical design on the pillars and transoms are carefully restored at the 1st and 2nd Storey to maintain a contiguous street front. The terra-cotta tile screen at the facades of the upper floors, maintains the proportion of the apertures below while providing a porous veil, a buffer zone between the inside and outside.
Layered 1st Storey The internal air-well, floating stairs and garden, lend interest to the spatial experience of shophouse by offering alternating naturally-lit spaces. This relates to the key spatial experience of the typology of the building.
