21.5.INS_A&A to Vocational School

This project involves the conversion of 2 existing classroom space into a hairdressing studio for a vocational school. The design make use of the high volume space found on site in the existing structure, to create a simple ‘house-like’ frontage, that alludes to a sense of inclusiveness for the learning space.

The house-like geometry is extruded from one end to opposite end of the building block. This gesture brings daylight into the classroom and frames the view of the greenery, resulting in a column-less open plan, defined by the textured accordion ceiling.

Students view the classes behind the full height glass panels, as objects in a storefronts. It slows down passerby, draws attention and arouses interest. This gesture peels away the austerity of the old building facade on the ground floor, to create an inviting front.

Kit of Parts Fabrication
Each hair dressing stations consist of simple prefabricated kit of parts that are designed for easy assembling on site to minimise disrupting to the ‘live” school environment during the A&A works.

This also ensure better quality checks and allow flexible reconfiguration and upgrades where required in the future.

These parts are also recyclable and can be reassembled in another venue for “pop up” services during charity events.

Students, Staffs and Customers experience and work flow are clearly mapped out with adjacency to equipment and storage areas, i.e. lockers, bins, sterilizing area, etc. Each service zone is able to operate independently with the tools and services within reach.
